About us - a little scoop!

Updated: Oct 7, 2024

We’ve been asked this question several times - why Spyce? Why spice blends from around the world? Why cook at home when you can order in or eat out with ease?

Well, we’re not geniuses (we are, but we’re also humble) but we believe we have a deep insight into our customers and the modern Indian consumer. And through our little story, hopefully we’ll have answered the above questions.

To begin with, we love food. And not just eating it, we love cooking too. It is our strong opinion that food (and cooking) is the single largest social lubricant known to man. It is the single most important catalyst for social interactions to build the greatest experiences and memories. And so, if it’s such an important element of life, it better be freaking delicious. And not just sometimes. Everytime.

And let’s face it, in this attention economy we live in, it’s easy to get bored. At work, sitting through long lectures, stuck in traffic, having the same meals everyday. Our goal at Spyce is to provide enough unique flavours, so you can go through a fortnight worth of meals, without having to repeat flavours, tastes and cuisines with complete ease and affordability.

Still not convinced? Ok, hang on - let’s jump into this.

Think about India in the 1980's. Think about how frequently we travelled abroad. Seldom, right? Most people born pre-1970 perhaps didn’t travel abroad more than 3 times in their first 30 years. And even when they did, they’d carry hoards of Indian food and snacking items - theplas, ready-to-eat curries, khakras and so on. They travelled predominantly to white, English speaking, developed countries, where they’d always go hunting for Indian restaurants. Sounds familiar?

Now compare that style of travel to how we travel today. Folks born after 2000, in most likeliness, travelled abroad before they turned 5. And the youth today aren’t restricted to white, English speaking countries. Oh no. They’re exploring parts of the world that their parents’ generation never thought of. Vietnam, Cambodia, Turkey, Morocco, Mexico, Argentina, Azerbaijan and so on. And not just the destination, their eating habits have completely transformed too. Now when they travel, they step out of their comfort and explore different flavours and local cuisines. Imagine going to Vietnam and eating at an Italian restaurant? No way.

Our barriers have been dropped and our palettes have expanded. We’re a lot more aware and curious about world cuisine and grab every chance we get to explore it. Think about international cuisines available in India as recent as two decades ago. Outside of Chinese and Italian, hardly any other cuisines were readily available. If you fancied sushi, you’d have to go to Wasabi at The Taj and drop 5k for a meal for two. And if you fancied a Middle-Eastern meal, the only option you had was a shawarma on the streets. Fast forward to today and you’ll find an explosion of restaurants specialising in international cuisines. You can now find stand alone Japanese, Korean, Mexican, Middle-Eastern restaurants opening every other day and if this isn’t a direct reflection of our evolving taste buds, I don’t know what is.

And lastly, our homes are undergoing drastic shifts too. With dual-income families as the new norm, the growing economy and development of cities across the country, nuclear families are now rapidly on the rise. And with all the factors mentioned above, preferences at home are changing too. No longer are folks happy with ‘roti, sabji, dal, chawal’ for all meals. We’re seeking unique dishes, preparations, flavours every day. Kids are discerning too, asking for (re: demanding) ‘fancy food’ items for all their meals. Most homes in big cities cook international-inspired dishes at least 3 times per week - think home made pasta, pizza, falafel, tacos, albeit with an Indian twist.

And so, to cater to an audience with ever-evolving tastes, practices and habits, Spyce was born to not only provide the much needed variety, but to aid you in your journey of experimenting with flavours from around the world, from your very own kitchens. But our job doesn’t stop at simply providing the international spice blends, we also want to create an exceptional repository of recipes that you’ll find in our Recipe Library to give you the much needed inspo to create epic meals.

Our recipes pander to all varieties of people. Whether you’re a complete novice in the kitchen or a pro, you’ll find recipes suitable to you. Whether you’re looking for breakfast, lunch or dinner options, or meal types like appetisers, finger foods or main course, we’ve got recipes for all. And lastly, whether you’re vegetarian, vegan, pescatarian or a carnivore, we’ve got you covered. You can check out our easy, printable recipe cards or bite-sized (no pun intended) recipe videos on our YouTube Channel - don’t forget to like, share & subscribe (we have to say it or we don’t get paid). Our customers love sharing their creations too and they always tag us on our social media, so you’ll find some customer love, reviews and recipes on our Instagram

So, in conclusion, we’re a small team with big ambitions. We believe we’re onto a winner with Spyce and our mission is clear - to bring bold, delicious and exotic flavours from around the world to kitchens around India (for now. Global domination to follow soon). You, our existing or soon-to-be customers, are our first priority and all the products we’ve launched so far, and will do in the future, will always be developed with you in mind. We hope you like our products and continue to support small businesses like ours - your support means the world to us.
